Brighton Rocks

We just came back from a couple of days in Brighton. Aside from the sea air, the great beach and pier, the masses of little shops tucked away in The Lanes, my favourite guitar shop and loads of great places to eat and drink...there's also some fantastic street murals. I would have called them graffiti but it doesn't really do them justice. There's a few more photos if you click on the Flickr widgety thing over there on the right hand column....or just go here.

Where The Wild Things Are

Maurice Sendak? Genius. Everything that is right with children's book illustration is right here. I absolutely love this book and as far as I can remember, it almost single-handedly inspired me to want to draw moody, slightly sinister illustrations for children's books (cue cackling laughter...). It's not something that I often get the chance to illustrate but you will notice the appearance of full moons quite often in my work...what does that tell you!? If you don't already own this then buy one now. A masterpiece.

Pulteney Bridge & Weir

Wandered past Pulteney Bridge and Weir the other night on the way out for a drink in the centre of Bath. The water looked green and turbulent. A chance to try out my new phone's camera.

Airfix

I probably spent most of my pocket money on sweets, closely followed by a weekly Airfix kit from the series one 1:72 range. The box artwork on these was mostly done by a guy called Roy Cross I believe. There a bit about him here. Fantastic Boys Own stuff.
That's me standing in front of a real Spitfire aged about 7 at Abingdon Air Display in 1968.

Letraset Transfers

Does anyone remember Letraset's Action Transfers? I had loads of these as a kid in the late sixties and early seventies. I found some of these in a Google search and they remind me that they must have been quite a major influence in getting me interested in drawing. Shame they don't make them anymore.

Whilst we're on nostalgia...next up: Airfix kits.

Old Sketchbooks

I was looking through some old sketchbooks and came across these. Good to know I did try and do some proper figure drawing at some point then...

Studio

A typical day in the studio. This photo was actually taken last year when working on the soon to be published 'Pop-Up Space Station'. That's a working dummy with my roughs on it there on my drawing board. Looks like I was looking for some reference for another project at the time.

Here we go (again)...

Let’s see how long this lasts…

I did start a personal blog a few years ago. Who knows where it is…floating around in cyberspace aimlessly I guess. Let’s hope this one fairs a little better. It might even be a bit more interesting, you never know…
